Plate BA 4860. URTEXT EDITION This urtext or scholarly (scientific) edition was published at least 25 years ago in the EU (or 20 years ago in Italy, before 1996 in the former USSR). Hence, the edition is public domain in its country of origin or a government publication. Such editions are also public domain in Canada because they fail to meet the minimum threshold of originality to qualify for copyright as an adaptation. The latter group consists of five violin concertos, four for horn, two for flute, and one each for oboe, clarinet, and bassoon. And, there is that although a prolific composer, he only wrote one piece that included the harpthe present one. His father was a successful court musician in their hometown of Salzburg, but he certainly was not above bolstering the family finances by sharing little Wolfgangs talents with the greater musical world. Several lengthy Italian tours were major events in the young composers life, and entertainingly documented in his letters home. It is easy to forget, today, that Italian opera ruled the roost in eighteenth-century European musical life, and so it was natural for young Wolfgang to begin remarkably early composing them. His father, Leopold, was a consummate stage door father, and was assiduous in promoting the genius of his young son. The blandishmentsand recognition--of Italian musical culture lay just over the Alps from Salzburg, and the early significant trips to Milan and Rome figured prominently in the lives of father and son. While it is tempting for many to project romantic notions as the basis for Mozarts professional motivations, we must remind ourselves that he wrote for his daily bread--not for the eternity of art. Whether producing masterpieces like Don Giovanni and the piano concertos, or charming little marches such as these--Mozarts life as a composer was driven by the necessities of the moment (and the patron with ready cash). Simply put, he followed the money and composed what his society needed and was willing to pay for. In addition to those masterpieces, which he largely composed for his own use, he also wrote concertos for other instruments.
